We’re the Party Place for the Sensitive Child

(making us a great space for everyone)

A highly sensitive child (HSC) experiences the world more intensely with heightened sensitivity to sensory stimuli, emotions, and social interactions. They are more aware of their surroundings, have a strong sense of empathy, and may be deeply affected by the emotional tone of their environment. Today, roughly one in three children are believed to be highly sensitive. I understand how difficult it is to be the sensitive child because I was one. As a “grown up,” I’ve continued to always be more sensitive than others. While there are many benefits and advantages to being “sensitive,” this can make the typical birthday party and other social situations uncomfortable or difficult.

Who wants to be uncomfortable on their birthday? – No one.

For many children, a birthday party is a highly anticipated event – there are balloons, cupcakes, music, and entertainment every which way you look. What’s not to love?

But for a sensitive child who gets overstimulated and overwhelmed easily, birthday parties can be very distressing. They might be having fun until they suddenly hit a wall, get cranky, beg to leave, or even have a full-blown meltdown.

If this sounds like your child (or even a friend of your child) don’t worry. Sensitivity is a normal healthy trait, one that won’t be misunderstood here. We understand that you’ve taken the time to learn about (and embrace) your child’s sensitivity. We have too. And we’re ready with a full range of ideas and options to help craft a birthday environment with the right amount of stimulation and excitement for your child. By planning your sensitive child’s party with us, you and your child can experience the joy of his or her birthday successfully.

Here’s How We Do It

First, We Meet – Taking the time to meet with you and your child is our first step. We welcome families to come to our space and experience it more than once before the party. For a sensitive child, this is a critical step to them being comfortable.

  • Your child is more comfortable in a familiar environment
  • Your child is more comfortable with people who are familiar
  • This step eliminates worry for your child and for you

Second, We Plan – During your visits to our space, we can step-by-step plan the party. We recommend that your child be involved in that planning. Some unusual options are included in our planning process that specifically address the needs of sensitive children.

  • In the Theatre, we will allow your child to test and set the volume for the show, pick the show title, and even choose the lighting/darkness of the theatre.
  • If balloon decorating and twists are desired, we’ll make decisions about “pre-making” and “pre-decorating” if the noise of live balloon twisting is bothersome to your child.
  • If face painting is desired but your child is sensitive about it, we can introduce it through a private painting for him or her ahead of time, and even paint on the arm instead.
  • We’ll discuss other options for activities while you’re here too.

Remember, when you book your party here, you are the only event happening on the property at that time. Our space is private and reserved specifically for YOU and your child’s party. This is one of the largest advantages of hosting your sensitive child’s party here; it’s what allows us to completely transform the space into an environment where you and your child can successfully celebrate.
